Welcome to Bear Lake

Bear Lake is located in the heart of Manistee County in Northwestern Michigan

First settled by Russell Smith in 1863, Bear Lake was named for the bear-shape of the lake it is situated on. Bear Lake was officially given a post office in 1865. Smith sold the land to George and David Hopkins in 1874, who were instrumental in developing business in the town. Bear Lake eventually incorporated into a village in 1893.
